Life is never static and always dynamic. Our surroundings and feelings are constantly shifting. An architecture which is designed in extension of ever changing people and environments inevitably asks for a certain adjustable character.
Folded Shatters consists out of a series of hinged foldable perforated panels. Its elegantly simple looking folding pattern is guided by a concealed integrated system of timing belts, gears, rails, wheels, and a single electric engine. The driving system uses minimal space, being designed in slender detail. This results in a folding movement, portrayed as a fluent gesture, undisturbed by technical interference.
The foldable system acts as a means for people to react to one of the strongest environmental forces, the light of the sun. By folding and unfolding, one can change the amount of light and warmth entering an interior realm, or to change privacy in relation to its surroundings. The movement, the folding pattern and perforation pattern translate into moving shatters of light and shadow, casted over wall and floor, adding a distinct character to a space.
